Are you a key decision-maker of a company operating in an increasingly changing landscape? Or a professional tackling a growing number of risks day in day out?

If you would like to know more about how actuaries can help manage risks faced by your company, the Actuarial Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) welcomes you to be part of the discussion by attending the second South Asian Actuarial Conference (SAAC) which will be held on 13 and 14 November at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, Colombo.

Actuaries are professionals who are trained to operate within an established framework to answer specific questions about risk. Therefore, ‘The Modern Actuary’, armed with a range of skills can be leveraged by companies operating in different industries.

After a successful inaugural SAAC held in 2017, AASL is organising the 2019 conference under the theme ‘Stepping into the Future – Trends, Emerging Risks, and Changing Roles’. The conference is open to actuarial, insurance, investment and finance professionals, CEOs and other key decision-makers of companies as well as regulators and academics.

It is a forum to discuss and learn from thought leaders in the fields of actuarial science, risk management, technology, insurance, finance, education and regulatory standards.

Mahidhara Devangere, who is the first South Asian to be elected to the council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK will grace the event as the Chief Guest. He will also speak at the conference about actuarial roles available in non-traditional areas, continuing his efforts of promoting the actuarial profession to a wider audience.

The keynote speaker at the 2019 conference is LOLC Group CIO Conrad Dias, who is also a board member of a handful of LOLC subsidiaries. His address which will be drawn from the experience gained in banking and finance, asset management, trading and manufacturing during a career spanning over 25 years will no doubt add value to the delegates present.

There are nearly 20 sessions scheduled during the two-day conference which will cover a range of topics, notably, IFRS 17, the changing role of the actuary, and the advancements in technology within insurance and finance.

A number of speakers will share their experience of their journey through IFRS 17 which is expected to be implemented by 1 January 2022. According to the chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board, IFRS 17 will likely be seen as the gold standard for insurance accounting internationally.

Actuaries, along with other professionals across the insurance value chain, are at the heart of this mammoth task of transitioning towards a new and improved global accounting standard. The conference will provide a platform for those at different stages of this process to learn from each other.

Technological disruption and customer centricity have driven companies to focus more on sustainable growth and continuous innovation. Companies that operate in this rapidly changing environment, face numerous regulatory, market, operational and strategic risks. Wherever there is risk, there are opportunities for actuaries. These opportunities will be explored further during the two panel discussions as well as by several speakers at SAAC.

To find out more about how ‘The Modern Actuary’ who is increasingly playing a more strategic role within companies, can help create the future of your company through innovative and practical solutions to your business needs, attend the conference by completing the registration form at your earliest.
