Tax hike on imported potatoes to save local farmers

The Government has decided to increase the import tax on one kilogram of potatoes by 50 rupees, the President’s Media Division announced.

The tax increase came into effect from Monday.

The Government said the levy on imported potatoes was increased so as to save the local potato farmer, as harvesting of potatoes in Nuwara Eliya district has commenced and a large crop is expected this season.
