Thimira appointed new MD/CEO at Colombo Dockyard

Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd. Japan being the majority shareholder of the Company has nominated and appointed Thimira S. Godakumbura as the Managing Director and CEO as its Nominee Director on the Board of Colombo Dockyard PLC effective from 19 April 2023.

Godakumara was previously the Chief Operating Officer and succeeded D. V. Abeysinghe who retired after a 38 year service (including six and half years as MD/CEO) at Dockyard. He however will continue to serve on the Board as a Director.

Godakumbura obtained BSC. Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering  from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1999 and started career in 2000 as Trainee Engineer at Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC).

He has gained vast experience and knowledge in the Ship Building and Ship Repairing industry with local and overseas training including in Onomichi Dockyard, Japan and Dry Dock World, UAE. He obtained a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Post Graduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a corporate member and a fellow of the institution of Engineers Sri Lanka and a fellow member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, United Kingdom. He is also serving as a member of the Indian Technical Committee of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).

During his career at CDPLC over 22 years, he has held many positions and served as Assistant Production Manager (Hull Construction), Special Projects Manager and Assistant General Manager (New Construction), General Manager (New Construction). He was re-designated as General Manager (Design and New Construction) with the addition of the Design Department under his purview. In December 2020, he was appointed as General Manager (Production) with the formation of expanded Production Division amalgamating Design and New Construction, and Ship Repair Production Division . Thereafter, he was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Company in March 2022 and continued to hold office till his appointment as MD/CEO on 19/04/2023.

Abeysinghe is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (University of Moratuwa) and a Fellow Member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, a Fellow Member of Royal Institution of Naval Architects, UK and a member of the Institute of Chartered Professional Managers.

Abeysinghe retired from his position as the Managing Director/CEO of the Company, after the Annual General Meeting of the Company held on 19/04/2023, after serving the company for 38 years in numerous roles in the Company, including six and half years as the MD/CEO of the company.
