Unlocking opportunities in Japanese market: Guide for Sri Lankan exporters

A workshop on “Exporting from Sri Lanka to Japan: Guide and Good Practices” was successfully conducted on 24 February, at Hotel NH Collection, Colombo, through collaboration between the International Trade Centre (ITC) Geneva, Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), and Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL). The program funded by the Japanese Government, was organised to create awareness among SMEs and already exporting companies about effectively accessing the Japanese market with a focus on key sectors such as Apparel, Tea, Spices, and Coconut-based products. 

This workshop organised following the research work conducted on market requirements in Japan, and the in-depth analysis done for the four product sectors viz. Apparel, Tea, Spices and concentrates and, Coconut based products. 

The opportunity to participate in the awareness workshop was extended to 35 participants from these sectors, allowing them to gain essential knowledge about Japan’s trade environment, including important regulations, market trends, and business expectations.

The workshop was commenced with welcome remarks delivered by ITC Senior Trade Facilitation Advisor and Project Manager Raghad Altalli, where the significance of Sri Lanka-Japan trade relations was highlighted. This was followed by introductory remarks presented by EDB Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mangala Wijesinghe and FCCISL President Keerthi Gunawardane, in which the need for strategic engagement with the Japanese market was emphasised. Additionally, insights on the role of diplomatic and trade collaborations in fostering export growth were shared by the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission Naoaki Kamoshida.

An informative presentation on the “Introduction and overview of the Japanese market” was delivered by an official from the Market Development Division of the Export Development Board (EDB). Additionally, valuable insights on “Opportunities and strategies for accessing to the Japanese market for Sri Lankan exporters” were presented by International Trade Centre (ITC) National Expert C.P. Jayasinghe, by offering actionable advice to support Sri Lankan exporters.

An engaging session titled “Experience Sharing by Sri Lankan Exporters to Japan” was organised to facilitate the exchange of insights, challenges, and success stories in the Japanese market. Representatives from leading Sri Lankan export companies, including Bio Foods Ltd., JK Garments Ltd., and Arava Group of Companies, shared their experiences. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board also participated as a panellist, offering further discussions and valuable advice to the participants.

Another key session on “Cross-Border Requirements and Expectations of Japanese Importers” was conducted. Valuable insights were provided by representatives from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Mitsui & Co., who elaborated on Japan’s import requirements and expectations. This session equipped participants with a deeper understanding of the Japanese market from the perspective of Japanese stakeholders. The event served as a significant platform for businesses seeking to expand their global reach. Participants gained actionable knowledge, industry best practices, and networking opportunities essential for entering and thriving in Japan’s trade ecosystem.

The session concluded with a networking lunch, fostering collaborations between Sri Lankan businesses and Japanese trade representatives. The workshop played a crucial role in equipping local exporters with the knowledge and connections needed to enhance their success in Japan. Future events of this nature are expected to be organised to continue supporting Sri Lankan businesses in strengthening their presence in the Japanese market.
