In a collaborative effort to empower local farmers, the Sri Lanka Agriprenuers’ Forum (SLAF) partnered with Hatton National Bank (HNB) and recently organised an insightful workshop on chilli cultivation for a group of farmers in Rajanganaya, Anuradhapura.
The event aimed to equip chilli farmers with essential knowledge, practical skills, and solutions to overcome challenges in chilli farming, while also fostering discussions on effective pesticide use and strategies to achieve success in the field. Approximately 65 selected participants attended the workshop with great enthusiasm, including local farmers and also some representatives from the Department of Agriculture – Rajanganaya Office. The presenter, Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Ltd., Deputy General Manager – Strategic Business Development Unit K.A.K. Boralessa delivered an engaging session on advanced cultivation techniques, pest management, and strategies to maximise yield and profitability. He emphasised the importance of proper management practices often overlooked by farmers, such as soil health, irrigation, proper fertilisation methods and timely pesticide application. Boralessa also provided practical insights into pesticide usage, highlighting its significant impact on harvest quality and quantity and also on the importance of safe application of pesticides and the way to do that through demonstrations. In addition to cultivation techniques, HNB conducted a session on financial security for farmers, focusing on the importance of saving in trustworthy banks, taking loans not for survival – but for investments only, avoiding scam businesses, not sharing OTPs, and protecting their debit card from fraud.
Participants praised the workshop for its practical approach and the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders. The event not only provided a platform for knowledge sharing but also highlighted the importance of collaboration between financial institutions, agricultural organisations, and farmers to drive sustainable growth in the sector. This initiative by SLAF underscores their commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s agricultural community, particularly in regions like Anuradhapura, where farming plays a vital role in the local economy. By providing farmers with the knowledge to overcome challenges, the workshop aims to foster a new generation of successful chilli cultivators, contributing to the nation’s agricultural development. The organisers plan to continue such initiatives in the future, further strengthening the agricultural value chain and empowering farmers across the country.
