Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning, Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave to participate at a conference on the illegal wildlife trade to be held on 12 and 13 February 2014 in London. Minister Amunugama will represent the Government of Sri Lanka at the conference. Several heads of state including Prince Charles and UK Prime Minister David Cameron will be in attendance. The conference will focus on dealing with three interrelated aspects of the illegal wildlife trade i.e. improving law enforcement and the role of the criminal justice system, reducing demand for wildlife products and supporting the development of sustainable livelihoods for communities affected by the international wildlife trade. The London conference will focus primarily on elephants, rhinoceros and tigers that, in their view, are the targets of organised criminal activity and are facing unprecedented levels of poaching.
