Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA), the prominent body representing the country’s Architects will be initiating an innovative approach that aims to strengthen the relationship between the creators of the building environment and the general public. Named the Archifest 2013, the event will encompass many activities, the most significant of which will be the Rally Arch, a sketch and ride challenge. This event will be held on 27 October, 2013 at the Independence Square between 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kicking off the Archifest 2013, the Rally Arch hopes to pair up teams each comprising of two architects and three individuals from the public. Partnered thus, each team will cycle around the Colombo City limits sketching and engaging in discussions about prominent features of architecture that they come across during the tour. Building dialogue The goal of this novel approach is to build up a constructive dialogue between architects and the general public while portioning cycling as a green initiative. A panel of five judges will be appointed to evaluate and select the best sketch proposals as each team will have to present their sketches and proposals at a final presentation. There are three exciting cash prizes to be won while registration per team would cost Rs. 1,500. “Architects are people who do innovative and creative things,” said SLIA President Professor Chitra Weddikkara. “They are the makers of the built environment and that is why we thought we have to do something different. This event is a symbolic and an inspiring change for us. We will strive to set an example to the whole society. “Archifest, particularly the Arch Rally will bring the young and the old together while giving an opportunity for the public to be involved.” Long term support The total sponsorship of the event will be provided by True Value Products Ltd., whose objective is to present a different image while boosting a positive attitude towards the feats accomplished by architects. True Value, with the tag line of ‘Bridging Technology and Aesthetics’, have grown from strength to strength since the company’s inception 10 years ago. Brands carried under their wing include the best brands around the world such as Monalisa and Mapei. “This is probably the first time in Sri Lanka that professionals are doing something different diverting from the traditional paths,” said True Value Products Ltd. As a company that emphasis on sustainability and innovation, we wanted to be a part of this difference,” Mohamed added. “SLIA have been supported by few organisations that have always been with us such as True Value. True Value will be empowering this event and will add glamour and colour to the Rally Arch,” said Professor Weddikkara revealing her thoughts about True Value’s contribution. Also giving his thoughts about the rally SLIA Immediate Past President Archt. Ranjan Nadesapillai said: “I think this is a good beginning as we always talk of green and sustainable concepts.
