As the premier stationer and the long established leader in school stationery, one of the cornerstones of the Atlas brand’s success has been the cutting edge research and technology that goes into developing its high quality range of school and office stationery products. Continuing this tradition of excellence and brand leadership, Atlas recently signed a MOU with the University of Moratuwa to set up a Rs. 20 million research and development laboratory at the university. The decision to set up the R&D laboratory at the university rather than within the company premises was made with the intention of enhancing the opportunities and resources available to local academia in order to encourage, develop and nurture local engineering talent, to compete regionally said Atlas CEO Nirmal Madanayake. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Madanayake emphasised that Atlas’ partnership with the university would further assist local academia by encouraging them to link academic theory with practical and commercially viable business processes.  He added that this approach would encourage more sustainable research and development processes as well as increase the opportunities and employability levels of the students. “As a local company which has achieved international renown, Atlas firmly believes in the skill and potential of our people, and is firmly committed to spurring local talent to achieve ever greater heights,” he said. In today’s consumer driven market place, delivering cost-effective consumer products of the highest quality while catering to the aesthetic demands of the discerning consumer is paramount.  The R&D lab will therefore focus on developing and enhancing energy and cost efficient production processes, adding commercial value and versatility to existing products and constantly develop new and innovative products. With three departments of high academic standards dedicated to engineering, architecture and information technology, the University of Moratuwa collaborates on R&D projects with several business organisations in the country. Renowned for its highly skilled and talented engineering faculty, high standards and cutting-edge technological development, it is well on the way to become one of the most recognised universities in the region. Atlas’ partnership with the university reflects the company’s passion for excellence and will result in a new chapter of collaboration, which will help to ensure continued success of the brand in the future and strengthen the ties between business enterprisers and the local academia.
