Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC once again has kept to its record of being recognised as an achiever this year by winning awards at multiple ceremonies. Piramal Glass Ceylon with its rich history of over 50 years of glass bottle making is a fine example of a local company going global by gaining business strength and global recognition with the fusion of a global conglomerate.
The then ‘Ceylon Glass Company’ came under the umbrella of global conglomerate The Piramal Group in 1999. The company has grown from strength to strength in all spheres since this day. It has gained in momentum in all fields and these awards are a perfect reflection of the company’s overall improvement and growth and the sustenance of the milestones achieved.
At the National Business Excellence Awards which is an annual award competition conducted by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) with a view to recognising business enterprises which have demonstrated excellence in business, whilst contributing to the economic progress of the country, Piramal Glass won the gold award as winner in the category of the ‘Chemical and Ceramic’ sector under the manufacturing segment.
At the National Productivity Awards, Piramal Glass bagged the ‘C Category’ award in the Large Manufacturing and Services category at its very first attempt of participation at this heavily contested competition.
MD/CEO, Piramal Glass, Sanjay Tiwari stated, “This a unique competition organised by the Ministry of Labour Relations and Productivity Promotion for organisations that have strived to face international competitiveness through productivity promotion. It involves the effective implementation of productivity strategies, adoption of effective techniques of productivity improvement, consideration of innovative approaches whilst creating a harmonious workplace with employee involvement programs and good labour management relations.”
At the National Chamber of Exporters awards, once again Piramal Glass was recognised for the third consecutive year with a gold award. With a history of 20 years, the National Chamber of Exporters is the main institute that recognises and rewards the country’s exceptional exporters for the vital contribution made to sustain and expand the local economy.
Piramal Glass was also the recipient of the Global Commerce Excellence Award, which is a special ‘one time’ award bestowed by the Government of Sri Lanka, the initiative being taken by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This is a special award given to non Sri Lankan companies in appreciation and recognition of the vital role played by them during the troubled times Sri Lanka experienced, and ensuring that the economy of the country was able to sustain its momentum, despite the disturbances experienced during the 30 year war.
“Piramal Glass invested over US$ 40 million in a new state of the art glass plant at Wagawatte, Horana in 2007 by doubling its capacity at the time. This was at the height of turmoil in the country and we are indeed honoured and proud of being a recipient of this award,” said Tiwari. “Piramal Glass looks forward to 2013 with renewed confidence and determination to further better its performance.”
