BASL to hold seminars on construction and commercial contracts

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka will organize Two seminars titles Construction Seminar ( From 9.00-12.30 ) and Commercial Contracts seminar - (From 1.30 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. on the Friday 15 August 2014 .) at the OZO Colombo No. 36-38, Clifford Place, Colombo 4. Areas covered at the Construction seminar: Introduction and salient features of construction matters, types of construction and infrastructure development projects including the various types of documents and legal contracts involved in such construction projects; The parties and stake holders of construction projects such as consultants, land/project owners, civil and different types of contractors and support service providers; International aspects where one or more stakeholders are from different jurisdictions or countries including the application of different laws (cross-border aspects); From the beginning to the end of any standard construction project – salient features and roles of different parties in order to achieve defined objectives (Commencing from proposal submission point up to the end of defect liability period); Project management and best practices to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of construction projects; Various dispute resolution methods such as adjudication, arbitration, mediation and litigation and Selected examples connected with construction projects.
Areas covered at the International Commercial Contracts seminar are Definition of commercial contracts and how such contracts become ‘International’ or ‘cross-border’; Salient features of international or cross-border commercial contracts where more than two parties in different jurisdictions/countries are involved and salient features of such contracts;
Application and use of important standard clauses such as governing law, dispute resolution, indemnity, payment methods (specially cross-border payments); Different types of dispute resolution methods used in commercial contracts; Some practical points applicable to contract drafting in order to minimize future disputes (best practices in contract drafting); Negotiations – before the contract and after the contract; how to ensure effective correspondence in order to minimize disputes and commercial contracts as a key function of in-house legal departments or corporate/employed lawyers.
The Speaker at the seminar is Anil Changaroth FCIArb FSIArb, Managing Director of CHANGAROTH, CHAMBERS LLC, Singapore. Changaroth has been in practice since 1995 following a Five-years career as an infantry officer with the Singapore Armed Forces. Graduating as a Barrister of England and Wales (Middle Temple) and currently Advocate and Solicitor of Singapore and Solicitor of England and Wales. He established CHANGAROTH CHAMBERS LLC on 1st July 2014. (www.changarothchambers.com). His work primarily involves commercial, civil, corporate & criminal litigation and dispute resolution with a focus on construction related adjudication & arbitration including sitting as an Arbitrator. Anil represents parties in Singapore and the region including Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Both Sessions are chaired by Malik Cader Attorney at Law and the Chairman of the Seminars on Commercial Law Committee.
