British High Commissioner visits George Sri Lanka HQ and Global Intimates factory

On Wednesday, 6 August, British High Commissioner John Rankin, accompanied by Gary Leslie, Head of UK Trade and Investment, visited the headquarters of George Sri Lanka who source and export over $ 210 million worth of apparel annually from Sri Lanka. ‘George’ is the trademark name of clothes sold in the UK supermarket chain Asda.

At the headquarters, the High Commissioner was shown a selection of the variety of high quality clothing produced in over 60 factories across Sri Lanka which have helped make George the fastest-growing retail brand of school uniforms in the United Kingdom. The High Commissioner also saw the state-of-the-art Global Intimates factory, where underwear for George is produced. Working together, George and Global Intimates have greatly increased efficiency at the facility, ensuring that the benefits of this improved performance are shared between the buyers, the supplier and, most importantly, the employees who produce the garments. The High Commissioner was delighted to see first-hand the excellent working conditions enjoyed by the employees and learn about the ethical policies agreed between George and Global Intimates to guarantee the prices are fair and reasonable for the quality of the product, ensuring happy customers in the UK and happy employees here in Sri Lanka.
