Browns Plantation Division braces for new challenges

Brown and Company said yesterday its Plantation Division is bracing for new challenges confidently.

Brown & Co. Ltd. was established in 1875 with the aim of manufacturing and importing all types of Agriculture & Farming machinery.

A small scale engineering company back then, the group today as a whole has passed the billion rupee mark by posting a profit before tax of Rs.1.27 bn in the year 09/10. With its roots firmly in the past, the plantation support services provided by the company, is incomparable to any other.

The Browns Group was the largest manufacture of machinery for different industries in Sri Lanka & still possesses these inherent competencies to service industries such as agriculture & plantaaxtions. The Browns Plantation Division caters to a large segment of the tea & rubber industry ranging from Private Tea Factory Owners to Regional Plantation Companies. Machinery is imported from reputed companies based in India, Kenya & China.

The General Manager for Plantations Jeremy Rajiah stated, “The reason for our success is primarily the trust our customers have in Browns. We are a well established Company who have been in this industry for 136 yrs. We have always backed our customers & provided outstanding service. We also go a step further to educate our customers by organising visits to other large plantations overseas where they are exposed to more modern technology & methodologies. Our products too are of very superior quality.”

A large range of machinery comprising of driers, heaters, green tea processing machinery, CTC machines and other innovative products like moving bed troughs have already been installed by Browns within the past year. The Company also provides Energy Saving Solutions among their wide portfolio of products & services.

Browns installed the largest wood fired heater in Sri Lanka for the tea industry recently at Mount Vernon estate in Kotagala along with the largest conventional tea drier at Sapumalkanda estate in Dereniyagala. This has an output of 450Kg / hr. They also represent “Parucco” the world renowned heater manufacturer and several other manufacturers of tea machinery.

Machinery was supplied for the rehabilitation of the sugar refinery of Galoya Plantations at Hangurana, which is a joint venture between Browns, LOLC and the Government.

Browns undertake repairs of old machinery irrespective of the brand and offers a 24/7 on call service which provides technical assistance by a team of specially trained & experienced engineers. Technical engineers from the overseas suppliers are also stationed for a more efficient service & to undertake special projects. A comprehensive warranty is also offered with all machinery sold & installations undertaken by Browns.

The Group also acquired Maturata and Pussellawa Plantations in collaboration with Taprobane Holdings. There are 31 tea estates and 9 rubber estates in total belonging to the above plantations making them one of the largest in the country.
