Business psychology is the scientific study of how psychological theories and skills can be applied to different areas of a business organisation to improve the productivity and efficiency of the organisation, while enhancing the satisfaction and quality of work life of the individuals involved. Business psychology is one of the latest trends in the corporate sector and the organisations are moving away from traditional HR and management theories in to more strategic, research based and advanced tools and methods. Psychology for HRM All businesses revolve around its people. Job dissatisfaction, absenteeism and problems in retention are main issues faced by HR professionals. Recruitment and selection processes can be made easy by Psychometric testing, a validated and reliable psychological test. HRM operations of grievance handling, motivation, employee health and wellbeing, performance management and team building, are some of the areas which can be enhanced by application of psychological procedures. Consumer psychology Analysing human behaviour and thinking is the key to identifying human preferences. Consumer behavior and their preferences for products and services will depend on various factors such as their age, culture, socio- economic level, seasons, race, religion, etc. Knowing the mentality of the consumers will be one move that can lead the organisation to flourish in the business market. It will help in making strategic marketing and sales plans which suit consumer needs, giving an organisation an opportunity to satisfy its respective customers. Consumer psychology provides the ability to conduct consumer research to get insights which are required in advertising, marketing and branding. Psychology in leadership Humans are a species that cannot live without human interaction, but how they like to be spoken to, treated, guided, advised and appreciated varies largely from one person to another, according to culture, social class, etc. Psychological perspectives of leadership and group behaviors that go beyond general management sciences would give you the ability to rise as a leader. BSc & MSc in Business Psychology courses introduced by the Colombo Institute of Research and Psychology (CIRP), a pioneer in Psychology education in Sri Lanka are unique because they are conducted not by HRM, Business or Marketing professionals which is the case in many places, but by a group of Psychology professionals who have years of experience in the field of Business Psychology.
