Growing trend in domestic milk production
In Sri Lanka the growing trend in domestic milk production continued in 2012 and 2013 with the concerted focus of the Government to promote the fresh milk/dairy sector. Increased contribution from the Northern and Eastern Provinces after the end of the war, improvement in infrastructure including the number of chilling centres of large/medium and small milk collecting centres, the various dairy development programs introduced by both Government and private sector companies in the dairy industry have contributed to overall development in the industry.
As a result of these development projects, total milk production increased by 16% in 2012 and continues to grow in 2013. At the same time, the import of milk powder declined by 5.5% in 2012.
