CAA makes quality certificate compulsory for all edible oils

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has decided to make it compulsory for the edible oil manufacturers to obtain the quality certificate for their products.

The Authority has discovered that many oils used for manufacturing purposes have been sold for human consumption.

Accordingly, the Authority has taken measures to inspect all edible oil preparation centres, the CAA Chairman Hasitha Thilakeratne has told the NewsRadio.

The Authority has decided to ban the edible oil producers who do not issue their products to the market without assuring the quality and certifying the standard of their products.

The Customs Department recently has seized 24 containers of palm oil imported from Malaysia which were unsuitable for human consumption. The businessman responsible for bringing down the stock was also banned from importing oils.

Investigations pertaining to the quality of oil commenced after discovering the importation of low quality palm oil for the past two years, the report said.
