CAA to step up raids on errant traders this Avurudu

The Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority Rumy Marzook says his agency has already taken measures to raid errant traders during the upcoming Sinhala New Year festive season.

He says that raids will be carried out on traders who have violated the Consumer Protection Act to protect the consumers.

The authority will fine the traders selling goods at higher prices, changing the fixed price of goods, selling goods after their valid dates are expired, selling goods underweight and for failure to display price lists.

The Minister of Trade has provided the required staff and all other facilities to carry out these raids and 50 officers were recruited recently, the Chairman has said.

The CAA has carried out 2,600 raids during the last two months and collected 30 million rupees as fines.

Marzook has urged the public to inform the authority about the trade malpractices being carried out by the traders in the market.

The Chairman has also emphasized that rumors of gas price hikes are not true and the Authority has not given any permission to increase the gas prices.
