The Sabaragamuwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry received an award at the fifth Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) Local Chamber Awards.

Its competitors were chambers from Philippine and Iran. The award was given during the 26th CACCI Conference in Katmandu, Nepal.

In a statement, Chamber President Dharshaka Rupasinghe said the chamber achievement is an achievement of the country and the business community particularly in Sabaragamuwa Province.

Rupasinghe paid his gratitude to past and present members of Director Board, all the members and the staff. He specially recognised the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) for nominating the chamber and the support extended in the process of applying.

“My sincere appreciation goes to President of FCCISL and its staff, Chief Minister, Ministers and officials of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, District Secretary and officials of Ratnapura District Secretariat and all public and private organisations who helped the chamber,” the Chamber President said.

The Sabaragamuwa Chamber was able to grab the award in the Big Chamber Category, where a total of eight nominations from four Asian countries have been forwarded to vie under the Big Chamber Category and five under the Small.  The four nominees competing under the Big Chamber Category included Sabaragamuwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry – Parañaque City from Philippines and Isfahan Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines from Iran.

The Local Chamber Awards, which CACCI first presented in 2004, aims to recognise local chambers for their outstanding achievement in promoting the industrial, commercial and social welfare of their respective communities. It is also intended to help promote CACCI awareness among members of local chambers in the region.

Nominated chambers were evaluated based on the following set of criteria: Outstanding Services to Members, Outstanding Services to Community and Country and Participation in CACCI Activities and   Projects. The FCCISL is a long standing member and represents the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) as the focal point in Sri Lanka.
