The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) programme serves to formally recognise 10 young people who excel in their chosen fields and exemplify the best attributes of the world’s young people.

This year, the award for Environmental Leadership was given to Subramaniam Eassuwaren, the Managing Director of the Carbon Consulting Company (CCC), whose aim is to offer a complete end-to-end service for companies that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

An amalgamation of both international expertise, as well as some of the most prominent Sri Lankan minds,  Subramaniam Eassuwaren (Deputy Chairman of Eswaran Brothers Exports ), under the guidance of Nobel Laureate, Professor Mohan Munasinghe and eminent conservationist, Dr. Ranil Senanayake has indeed made a difference to Sri Lanka’s corporate world and the way they view the environment.

In his acceptance speech, young Eassuwaren who is a Certified Carbon Footprinting Expert, the UK Carbon Trust, raised many ethical issues which are often overlooked if not ignored by most corporates, not just locally but internationally. “Is profit the only factor in business? Is my bottom line the only area to focus on? When we started documenting the values and principles that my late grandfather V.T.V. Deivanayagampillai lived by, these were amongst the questions we had to ask ourselves. How was our 67 year old family business affecting the environment? How were we affecting the community around us? We didn’t know, and that’s how this journey started. We started asking ourselves what should we do as responsible citizens to preserve the world and our environment for future generations?”

Eassuwaren thanked his mentors, namely Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, Sri Lanka’s only Nobel Laureate and renowned conservationist, Dr. Ranil Senanayaka. His colleagues, namely his partner Fazal Fausz as well as the rest of the staff at CCC, Nisitha, Lakmini, Panchali and Chalaka, were acknowledged by Eassuwaren for the passion and dedication displayed by them, day in day out to the cause. His family, in particular his father too were thanked. “My father had the patience to let me dabble in carbon footprinting and forestry when the economic benefits were far from clear. Thank you Appa for your guidance and love”.

Other winners in the past from Sri Lanka include Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralidharan, Otara Chandiram and Prof. Lakshman Watawala, amongst others.

The Carbon Consulting Company (CCC) has been created with the purpose of helping organisations reduce their environmental impact and maximise the CSR and marketing opportunities arising from these efforts.  The CCC’s mission is to help corporate leaders and decision makers develop the skill sets and knowledge base that would be required for survival in the dawning era of a low carbon economy.  The CCC is a Carbon Footprint Expert certified company, and is accredited by the Carbon Trust, the UK Government’s carbon standards body.   It is also an official certifier of the Carbon Neutral Company of the UK.
