The Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA) will hold its 55th open forum titled ‘Ensuring safe and secure work for women’ on 9 June from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS).
CEPA is organising this open forum to generate a tri-lingual public discussion on the exploitation, precariousness and violence associated with women’s work, and the political and economic relations that cause them. In particular, the forum will discuss the systemic exploitation of women in the Free Trade Zone, tea plantations and informal sector.
This forum will further discuss critical needs, policies, and practices that must be adopted to confront the causes and consequences of injustices faced by women workers in sectors that predominantly employ women’s labour. The speakers will discuss the current policy and legislation that govern labour and its impact on worker welfare, as well as the role and ability of legal and policy mechanisms to deal with labour inequalities to ensure safe and secure work for women.
The speakers are Padmini Weerasuriya (Coordinator at the Women’s Centre, Ekala), Menaha Kandasamy (President of the Ceylon Plantation Workers Red Flag Union) and Prashanthi Jayasekara (Researcher at CEPA). The Forum will be moderated by Dr. Sepali Kottegoda (Executive Director at the Women and Media Collective).
The event is free and open to the public, and will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English (with simultaneous translations).
