Ceylon Chamber, SLSI promotes international standardisation practices

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce together with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) organised a seminar to promote international standardisation practices among local firms, covering both public and the private sector. This program was funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) managed South and South East Asia regions (SESA) program. Approximately, 200 participants, representing local industries, government agencies, universities and NGOs took part in this event. Speaking at the event, Dr. L. N. Senaweera, Director General of SLSI stressed on the impact of standardisation in today’s global trade. B.S.P. Mendis, a former Director General of SLSI/ and international consultant making a presentation at this event, insisted on the importance of adopting international standardisation processes. During the seminar, it was revealed that by adhering to international standards and quality systems/processes, an organisation can become competitive and produce competitive products and services. The importance of private sector involvement (who has the technical expertise) in the development of international standards, to accommodate the national interest was also discussed. SESA aims to build institutional capacity that ensures a broader stakeholder commitment towards international standardisation. Speakers at this forum demonstrated the importance of the South and South East Asia (SESA) regions program, which promotes trade, sustainability and environmental friendly development through standardisation. LAUGFS Holdings Ltd. Manager – Quality & Certification Ajith Prasanna and Lalan Rubber Ltd. Senior Manager – Quality assurance Upul Gunasinghe also shared their experience in implementing international standards through ISO International technical specification; ISO 14067 - Carbon Footprint (CFP) implementation on solid tires and rubber gloves respectively. LAUGFS Holdings and Lalan Rubber were the two companies chosen by the CCC to run a pilot project, to be part of the standard implementation component under the SESA program.
