Ceylon Chamber’s sustainability contest sees record entries

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has received applications from more than 75 local firms to compete in the upcoming Best Corporate Citizens Award 2014 and project awards, a record in the competitions history, which runs up to over a decade.
Among the companies who have applied for the competition are multinational firms, diversified conglomerates, SMEs and public quoted firms.
“The interest shown by the competitors’ shows that the BCCS has become a place where companies want to showcase their sustainability programs to the world,” said Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Acting Secretary General Alikie Perera.
“This interest also shows that an increasing number of local firms are focusing on adopting socially and environmentally-friendly business practices, which will ensure sustainable development,” she added.
The applicants will now undergo an intense judging and an evaluation process conducted by a highly recognised panel of judges and evaluators and the winners will be recognised at a grand ceremony, which will be held on 25 November at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.
The annual competition, recognises the sustainability initiatives taken by the firms, which are from both the private and public sector, covering the areas of Environment, Employee, Customer, Community Relations, CSR, Governance, Finance Performances and Economic Contribution
The winner will take away the ‘Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2014’, while awards will also be given to the ‘Best Ten Corporate’ firms.
The upcoming BCCS edition will also award category-based best performers, covering Environmental Management, Envi-ronmental Value Addi-tion, Environmental Integration, Employee Relations, Customer Relations, Community Relations, Governance, Financial Performance and Economic Contribution.
While awards will also be given for sector-based best performances, covering the areas of manufacturing, infrastructure, finance, non-financial and diversified holdings.
‘The Best Presented Application’ will also be awarded forhard work and creativity.
In addition, the competition will recognise the exemplary projects carried out by companies to address the environment, education, infrastructure, and North and East reconciliation to name a few areas.
