CIMA elects new President

Malcolm Furber FCMA, CGMA, has been elected President of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) at its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 15 June. Furber has been a member of CIMA’s council for 15 years and was involved in CIMA’s last four qualification reviews and the review of its ethical code. He was previously chairman of CIMA’s Lifelong Learning Policy Committee and is also a regular speaker for CIMA globally on integrated business planning and performance management.

In 1980 he moved to South Africa and held various senior positions in finance, information technology and corporate planning at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). He now runs his own consulting business and has played a major role in business improvement assignments in both the private and public sector in South Africa, including a two year business intelligence project at the South African Revenue Services. In his spare time Furber is a keen golfer, and enjoys hiking, water sports, aerobatics and travel. He is married to Zandra and has two daughters, Zantelle and Christie. On becoming CIMA President, Furber said: “I am delighted to be elected as President of CIMA. It is a great honour and I look forward to further building on the institute’s global success.” “Amidst difficult economic conditions, CIMA’s relevance to global employers continues to grow. I am very excited to be presiding over CIMA as our joint venture with the American Institute of CPAs, which has established the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation, shapes the future of the management accounting profession. I will be looking to further develop CIMA’s activities and strategies on a global scale with our students, members and stakeholders.” In addition to Furber’s appointment, Keith Luck FCMA, CGMA, has been elected Deputy President, and Myriam Madden FCMA, CGMA, has been appointed Vice President. Luck has extensive experience in both the public and private sector and has been a CIMA speaker and an ambassador for the organisation throughout his career. In 2004 he was voted CIMA’s Business Leader of the Year for his pivotal role in transforming the finances of the Metropolitan Police. Madden was born and educated in Ireland and is a graduate of the University College Cork. From 2002 until 2004 she worked at HBOS as the project manager for the development of a corporate Balanced Scorecard, which became the standard reporting tool across a number of finance departments in the UK. She is currently Director of Finance at Historic Scotland.
