The Annual CMA National Management Accounting Conference 2014 scheduled for 18-20 June at the Taj Samudra will focus on fast tracking economic development in alignment with government policies. After three decades of civil war peace has dawned on Sri Lanka. It is now necessary to catch up on the lost development and surge ahead with rapid economic development and growth for the prosperity of the nation. Sri Lanka has made steady progress and achieved economic growth with the GDP and per capita incomes showing positive growth. Out of the three sectors of economic growth agriculture and industry have grown with services reaching over 50% of the total, and outperforming the other sectors. Many major projects undertaken by the Government such as ports, airports, highways and roads have been completed. In order to derive economic benefits from these projects to the masses they should generate rapid growth in all sectors of economic development including the domestic and export sectors, which provide the inflow of much needed foreign exchange to build reserves. Development needs to be spread to all parts of the country and the small and medium sectors strengthened. This would also entail primary, secondary, higher education and professional courses to be available to students to enhance their skills and fit into the knowledge economy. FDIs, education and private sector participation The importance of foreign direct investments, public private partnerships and active participation of the private sector needs to be stressed to take forward the economy and provide equitable economic development. The banking and financial sector have to play a lead role in private sector projects. Cost control and management accounting principles and practises will further enhance the success of these projects. In the education sector while the universities are much sought after by advanced level qualified students we have still not been able to provide sufficient places to all students qualifying. We need to seriously consider models in our neighbouring countries which have put them far ahead of Sri Lanka by setting up university colleges affiliated to the State universities. This will double and treble the intake of numbers over a short period of time. Professional education enables graduates and A/L students to be trained for a job environment providing an attitudinal change making them employable. CMA the National Professional Management Accounting body in Sri Lanka has organised this National Management Accounting Conference on a relevant theme which will discuss how this country could be taken forward rapidly and benefits provided for the prosperity of the nation. The topics have been selected to cover all sectors of the economy and CMA has invited eminent local and foreign speakers to address the conference and wish to thank all of them for accepting its invitation.
