Colombo Dockyard Plc has been looking to develop the markets in Europe, the UK, the Far East and the Indian Subcontinent, employing energetic marketing campaigns to generate quality business leads for ship repair and ship-building enquiries. Colombo Dockyard Plc, established in 1974, has operated in collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Ltd. Japan since 1993.
UK ship owners and managers used the facilities at the Colombo Dockyard extensively throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but following the development of Singapore and Hong Kong as ship management hubs this usage dropped off.
However, various factors are now combining to make Colombo Dockyard a very attractive option for UK ship managers and owners. For vessel trading in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asian waters the repair facilities at this yard are of a high quality and provide convenient access.
On the shipbuilding front, Colombo Dockyard is able to construct specialist offshore support vessels, globally proven in the offshore operating field. During his visit, Stevenson was able to see firsthand the excellent logistic support available in Sri Lanka for routine repairs as well as for carrying out offshore-related projects.
As a result of the renewed European interest, the yard has appointed UK-based Simplex-Turbulo Ltd., whose dynamic team is headed by Stevenson, to promote its facilities. Simplex-Turbulo Ltd. is a member of the ST Diesel & Marine Group which also includes Lincoln Diesels Ltd. and associate companies Maritime Propulsion Services and Maritime Propeller Repairs. The group is an independent company, founded in 1935, dedicated to keeping customers’ engines and vessels working as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.
