President Mahinda Rajapaksa has informed the chief incumbents of the Buddhist Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters as he paid a courtesy call this week that construction work of the Colombo-Kandy Expressway would begin next year.

The President had said that the Colombo-Kandy Expressway would be constructed via Kurunegala, with previous plans of constructing it via Rambukkana being discarded. The new route will be more useful since it goes via Kurunegala and will be less expensive to construct. The compensation needed for people displaced by the construction is lower and the construction cost will also be low since the road goes via less mountainous areas, the President had explained.

He also pointed out that eight investors had come forward for the construction of the expressway.
