Access Engineering, the leading infrastructure development solutions provider in Sri Lanka, recently commenced operations on another landmark project in the country, the construction of the Veyangoda flyover.

Design and construction of the Veyangoda railway crossing flyover was entrusted to Centunion S.A of Spain and Access Engineering by the Road Development Authority of Sri Lanka which is funded by the government of Spain. Construction on the two-lane, 315 metre long, 10.4 metre wide flyover, began in October 2012 and is planned to be completed within 14 months.

“Once completed, the flyover will help relieve the heavy traffic jams at the Veyangoda railway crossing that have plagued the area for many years due to trains that constantly cross the main road, sometimes over 100 times each day. These daily traffic situations that have been causing severe inconveniences to commuters as well as the people of Veyangoda, will become a thing of the past,” said Project Manager of the Veyangoda flyover construction Jeewaka Dahanayake.

The Veyangoda flyover is also of special importance because it is located on the main access route to the Katunayake International Airport from the Kandy Road and the Sabaragamuwa Province. It also links the largest Industrial Free Trade Zones in Sri Lanka located in Katunayake, Wathupitiwala and Seethawaka, while further providing commuters an access route to major hospitals as well as towns in the areas such as Gampaha, Negombo and Nittambuwa.

Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, who addressed a meeting during the commencement of the project, requested the contractor to complete the project by September 2013, three months ahead of the scheduled contract period. The flyover will be constructed with minimum damage to public property and will be the newest addition to the network of roads, bridges and flyovers being built throughout the country in accordance with the vision of the Mahinda Chinthana.

In addition to the convenience it provides to commuters, the unhindered access road to the Northern Expressway would lead to the rapid development of the Veyangoda town and its surrounding areas.
