The Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development has recently established a Craft Production and Marketing Village with financial aid from the Indian Government.
The initiative was proposed by the National Crafts Council to the Ministry with the objective of uplifting the living standards of craftsmen in the Jaffna District.
To be set up by the A9 road, the construction of the building at the village is expected to commence within the next three months, and is scheduled to be completed within a period of six months. While craftsmen in that region will be presented with the opportunity to market products at their hometown, the Craft Marketing and Production Village will serve as an attraction to local and foreign tourists where they will be able to witness the manufacturing process and make purchases. Furthermore, craftsmen registered with Palmyrah Development Board will be given an opportunity at the village to promote their product. The National Design Centre has expressed it will provide new design to the craftsmen for this purpose. National Crafts Council also revealed plans on commencing a training centre at the village for the craftsmen of that area.
