The signing of the agreement for the construction of the 350 meter tall Lotus Tower Building and the Leisure Garden, which will be the tallest tower in South Asia took place this week in Colombo.

Cabinet approval was given for this project recently on a proposal made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. A seven and half acre land belonging to the Urban Development Authority at D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha has been earmarked for this project.

The Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Anusha Pelpita said that there will be a significant development in the television and telecommunication sectors upon construction of this multi functional tower, which will provide facilities for 50 television services, 50 broadcasting services and ten telecommunication providers.

Construction work of the Tower will be completed within 30 months and will be managed by a public company owned by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

This eleven storied tower will have a revolving restaurant on the fourth floor of the Lotus Flower segment which crop up from the fifth floor of the building.  The Lotus Flower segment will have seven floors.

The Tower will have a restaurant which will be a very unique one in which about 600 persons could partake meals at a time, viewing the scenery of Colombo city.

The huge Reception Hall that would occupy the third floor of the Lotus Flower segment will have the capacity to accommodate about one thousand persons. It would also provide a great opportunity to hold mega functions at this Reception Hall.

The 350 meter Lotus Tower will be the tallest building in South Asia and the 19th tallest building in the world.  It will be 26 meter taller than the Eiffel Tower (324 meter in hight) and 17.4 meters taller than the 332.6 meter high Tokyo Tower.

The Tokyo Sky Tree with a height of 634 meters presently being constructed and scheduled to be completed in February this year will be the tallest tower in the world followed by the Canton Tower of China with a height of 600 meters.
