A presentation/discussion on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Cuba’ organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka will be held on Thursday 22 August 2013 from 1500 h to 1630 h (3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at the Chamber Auditorium, 450 D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo-10. The Guest speaker will be the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba Charge d’affaires Indira Lopez Arguelles. She will speak on the current business trend, trade potential, and opportunities for export, import, investment and service for Sri Lankans in Cuba. The participants will get an opportunity to interact with the officials of the Cuban Embassy and get information on the relevant areas.
Sri Lanka and Cuba established diplomatic ties in 1959, and celebrated its golden jubilee of fifty years in 2009. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean with a population of over 11 million and Havana is its capital city. It is mostly recognised as a sugar producing country and famous for its Cuban cigars, and calypso music.
Sri Lanka imports from Cuba, sugar, nickel, fish, citrus fruits, tobacco products, medicinal products and coffee. Sri Lanka exports to Cuba, ceramicware, tea, coconut coir, apparel and clothing, precious and semi precious stones and leather goods. The most important mineral resource is nickel.
Sri Lanka and Cuba being two island nations have similar climatic conditions and some crops that are identified for exchange are Mango, Papaya, Guava, Pineapple and Coconut. Relations between the two countries today are multifaceted covering trade, investment, education, science and technology.
Cuba has tripled its market share of Caribbean tourism in the last decade; as a result of significant investment in tourism infrastructure.
