Discussion on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Korea’

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka will hold a presentation/discussion on ‘Bilateral Trade between Sri Lanka and Korea’ on Wednesday 8 May 2013 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the new Chamber Auditorium No 450 D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10.

The Guest Speaker will be Jongmoon Choi, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Sri Lanka assisted by D.W. Lee, Director General of Korea Trade Centre (KOTRA). They will speak on the current business trend, trade potential, opportunities for export, import, investment and other services available for Sri Lankans in Korea.

Sri Lanka exports to Korea woven fabrics, textiles and garments, apparel clothing accessories, electrical machinery and parts, raw bristle fibre of coconut (coir), gloves, mittens and mitts, furniture, lamps and fittings, activated carbon and natural rubber.

Sri Lanka imports from Korea woven fabrics, yarn and thread, synthetic fibres, electrical and electronic items, machinery and machinery parts. Cars and vehicles are the largest items imported from South Korea.

Sri Lanka has the potential to expand the export of value added rubber products, such as healthcare products, solid rubber tyres, footwear for industrial use and other latex based items such as household, industrial and surgical gloves. Other potential product areas are limonite, graphite and silica sand, canned and processed fruits and juices, processed gherkins, baby corn, essential oils and spices.

Other products with enormous potential are floricultural products particularly rooted plants, uprooted cuttings, cane, tissues, cultured plants, cut flowers, cut decorative leaves and flower seeds. There is also a demand for Sri Lankan fruits such as pineapple, papaya, durian and coconuts in Korea.
