Economic association draws up its 2013 program

The Sri Lanka Economic Association has drawn up its program for the year 2013. The plan is to conduct seminars on topics that relate to the economic problems of the country. Some of the topics planned are;

  •  The trade deficit and what should be done to reduce it

The main speaker will be Sarath Rajapathirana who has served abroad in several capacities as an economist.

The second speaker will be Chandana Karunaratne of the Institue of Policy Studies. The discussant will be T.G. Savundranayagam formerly of the Research Department of the Central Bank, at the OPA Auditorium. The date will be announced later.

  • A Strategy to promote Investments and a review of the present policies

It will be a panel discussion and the panellists will be drawn from the Public/Private sectors and will include Dr. Anura Ekanayake and Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy, formerly of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The discussant will be Lloyd Yapa formerly of the Export Development Board.

  • Upgrading the teaching of economics in the local universities

Speakers likely to be drawn from Prof. Danny Atapattu, Dr. Sunil Chandrasiri and Prof. Anoma Abeyratne

  • The stock market
  • Small and medium Industry sector- financing
  • Inflation and the Cost of living
  • The importance of ports for our economy

The Association would welcome persons who would volunteer to speak on the last four topics. They could send an abstract of what they would like to speak on to the Association office in the OPA building, on Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha Colombo 07.
