The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Southern Asia Region would be hosting the Engineering Tomorrow – a Southern Asia event for the young engineers of the constituting countries, from 21 to 22 November at the Ozo Hotel, Marine Drive, Colombo.
The participating nations include Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The event consists of Global Engineering debate, Young Member Conference, Learned Society talks, Speak Out for Engineering and Design competition.
The main event will be the Global Engineering presentation and debate. On 21 November a top level panel discussion focusing on “Which type of energy should Sri Lanka invest on to ensure its future? - Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, renewable sources of energy” will be held with Ministers Champika Ranawaka and Ajith P. Perera, Raja Amaratunga, Parakrama Jayasinghe and T.M.R. Tennakoon as speakers and panellists. It will be moderated by Newton Wickramasuriya.
Learned Society Talks and Young Member Conference which will focus on inspiring the young generation to pursue engineering as a career will be held on 22 November.
During Engineering Tomorrow event, on 21 November, the Asia-Oceania Finals for Speak Out for Engineering, an IMechE marquee event, and a Design competition will be held. Following this, the IMechE Sri Lanka Group will be hosting all overseas delegates at the Group Annual Dinner at the Taprobane Hotel, Colombo.
Southern Asia Chair Sam Perera chairs the events with Sri Lanka Group Chair Lucien Pereira assisting with an able committee.
The IMechE is one of the fastest growing professional engineering institutions. Headquartered in London, but with operations around the world, the institution has over 110,000 members in more than 140 countries, working at the heart of the most important and dynamic industries.
The Institution’s Southern Asia Region has seen rapid growth in the last few years and future growth of the institution expected to come from the international, Asia Pacific in particular, which currently comprises of 11% of the world membership. The Southern Asia Region with 3.5% has foreseen a need to nurture our young engineers to carry engineering to greater heights tomorrow.
