For the first time in Sri Lanka, Etisalat will be organising a forum on Android. This pioneering initiative will see experts from Google as well as leading smartphone manufacturers showing off some of the latest developments in the Android mobile operating system and the latest smartphones and tablet PCs that support Android OS.

Slated for 8 November, starting at 3 p.m. at the SLECC, the forum will also give tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs an opportunity to see the capacity that Android has as a mobile application development platform.

The widely-used operating system designed for mobile devices by IT giant Google, Android, has become a staple in many of today’s smart phones and tablet PCs; over the last two years Android smartphones have become the fastest selling smartphones on the market.

Used across a wide variety of devices, more and more mobile device manufacturers, such as Samsung and Huawei, are opting to build Android supported products.

Etisalat’s CEO Dumindra Ratnayaka said: “The goal of the Android Forum is to give the public a chance to see the limitless possibilities that will be available to them through using Android powered hand held devices.

We understand that the role of mobile telecommunication provider is changing, today people are looking to satisfy an ever increasing amount of their computing needs using mobile devices, and understanding the way that application based operating systems such as Android work, will be key going forward.”

Etisalat’s Senior Marketing Manager Postpay and Mobile Broadband, Gamika De Silva, touching on Etisalat’s proactive approach to dealing with the evolution of telecommunication technology, said:

“The days of mobile-service operators simply marketing products to consumers have passed. Today’s consumers are themselves the driving force behind technological evolution globally, application based operating systems like Android need tech savvy users to not only maximise their potential but also to become app developers themselves  and develop the applications that will address the needs of customers.

What we have always been striving for, first with the AppZone and now with the Android Forum, is to provide the platforms and knowledge base required to empower local technocrats to be driving forces in IT development, on par with their international counterparts.”

Those interested in attending the forum can e-mail their details to [email protected] or can log onto www.etisalat.lk and register to be granted free entrance to the event. As one of the most powerful players in Sri Lanka’s telecommunications industry, Etisalat continues to discover new horizons and explore new possibilities in the domain. Etisalat further offers Sri Lanka’s most cutting edge Internet solutions with the launch if it’s 3.75G technology.

Standing at the top of the ladder in innovation, quality and customer service, they have passed an impressive 3.5 million subscribers in a record time since their launch and Etisalat remains dedicated to increasing its subscriber base and taking the company to greater heights.
