The Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards program (AREA) honoured Expolanka Holdings PLC at the AREA Awards 2013 for its services to the less-privileged communities through its CSR program ‘Expo Medix’. Enterprise Asia’s Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards program (AREA) recognises and honours Asian businesses for championing sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship in several categories including Green Leadership, Investment in People, Health Promotion, Social Empowerment, SME CSR and Responsible Business Leadership. Expo Medix is a fast growing chain of affordable medical clinics that provides free medical consultation and subsidised drugs to patients. Expolanka Holdings PLC Head of Marketing, Corporate Communications and CSR Paddy Weerasekera said: “We are privileged to win this prestigious award. This recognition is a tribute to our sustainable business culture and our tireless efforts at empowering the community.” He added: “We started Expo Medix with a simple medical clinic. At present the project has expanded to incorporate a fully-fledged chain of medical clinics located within Colombo and its suburbs, served by qualified doctors and nurses. We are enthusiastic about the project and will continue to improve our services further.” The clinics are fully functional in providing medical consultation, diagnostics services and operations for minor surgery requirements. They also provide medicines and drugs at a subsidised cost. Expo Medix provides healthcare to patients from the lower income segments, who cannot afford the usually high-priced private healthcare system and find themselves unable to address their immediate health needs satisfactorily. AREA award in the Health Promotion category honours businesses that encourage and promote programs aimed at raising awareness and improving the health of their direct and indirect stakeholders. The judging criteria for the award take into consideration health related programmes which focus on issues of social concern such as dietary health, obesity, heart disease, early screening for treatable and preventable diseases, reducing child mortality, improve maternal health or combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. AREA is held in four sub-regions of Asia, namely, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Middle East. A large number of business and government leaders, diplomatic representatives, social and community leaders, local and international media took part in the occasion which was held at the JW Marriot, New Delhi.
