Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka will address a forum on the topic ‘The Untold Story: Lessons to be learnt from the military for better management’ on 3 March at the Kingsbury from 4.00 p.m. onwards. The members of the corporate and management world gathered at the event will seek to learn from the experiences of Fonseka, who commanded hundreds of thousands of ground troops in Sri Lanka to win a battle that many believed would not be possible. In modern day business, many military terms and strategies are adopted as best practices to run organisations in the most effective manner. Be it planning, management, communication, strategy, logistics, supply chain management or HR, all these avenues have deep roots within military developments, especially those that occurred after World War Two. Winning a deadly guerrilla war requires the combined skills of all of the above, along with determination, motivation and, most importantly, leadership, discipline and the right attitude. General Fonseka, one of the most respected soldiers produced by the Army, led troops to victory against an opponent that the world acknowledged as the deadliest terror group. The General joined the Army in 1970 and saw extensive action throughout the 26-year civil war, culminating in a term as Commander of the Army from 6 December 2005 – 15 July 2009. As commander, he pledged that the war would not be left for any other person to finish and as promised oversaw the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War, which resulted in the total defeat of the militant LTTE organisation. He also survived an assassination attempt when an LTTE suicide bomber attacked his motorcade in April 2006. Following the end of the war, General Fonseka was promoted to a four-star rank in the Sri Lanka Army, becoming the first serving officer to hold a four-star rank. He has been described as Sri Lanka’s most successful Army Commander.
