Germany supports green transportation through gas three-wheelers

The German Embassy in Colombo recently partnered with Alliance Finance Company PLC to support their gas powered three-wheeler project aimed at promoting green transportation alternatives in the city.

Alliance Finance first introduced the gas conversion unit for three-wheelers in 2010. Today it has improved the efficiency of the gas-powered engines with the support of Eco-Tuk, a Dutch company that focuses on developing eco friendly, sustainable solutions for the transportation sector.

The new phase of the project, launched under Germany Helping Hands, supports 20 beneficiaries from low income groups living in and around Colombo, to start an eco-friendly livelihood.

“Germany is at the forefront of promoting renewable energy options in transportation and power generation,” German Ambassador Dr. Jürgen Morhard said. “We are glad to partner with a Sri Lankan company that wants to infuse green technology into one of the most popular forms of transportation in the country.”

The black and yellow EZY-drive three-wheelers, carrying the Germany Helping Hands logo can be pre-ordered by dialling 0777-854854. According to pilot studies by Eco Tuk, gas three-wheelers are more fuel efficient and have 25 to 30 per cent less emissions when compared to conventional petrol vehicles. Drivers can also save about Rs. 9,000 per month on fuel costs, since a litre of gas is less expensive compared to petrol.

Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Alliance Finance Romani de Silva sees this with economic, social, and environmental benefits spreading beyond Colombo in the near future.

“The potential for green transportation alternatives is tremendous. We think that if we pilot this project well, we can create a triple bottom-line business model for the entire tuk-tuk industry – we can do something that will benefit the environment, while giving people a dignified livelihood,” he said.
