A global trade unionist who visited Sri Lanka has pledged to support the country regain the GSP Plus trade concessions of the European Union. General Secretary of IndustriALL, Jyrki Raina has pledged support to the country, but has also called on the government to shift its position on several issues like workers’ rights, human rights and working environment. Raina visited Sri Lanka from February 15-20 on a fact-finding mission regarding issues faced by local workers, including those unjustly terminated by their employers. He told the media that the government needed to address certain issues faced by the workers in the country and that the international community was keeping a close watch on it. Raina met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, trade union leaders and senior labor officials during his visit to Sri Lanka. He also said that he had raised some of the issues faced by the local workers with the President and relevant authorities. The Geneva-based IndustriALL Global Union, representing 50 million workers in 140 countries, is identified as the world’s single largest trade union federation.
