Cabinet has approved two reservoir projects to be carried out on the Kumbukkan Oya and Heda Oya reservoirs and the Government will accordingly call for expressions of interest (EoIs) and project proposals for the programs.
The Kumbukkan Oya reservoir, with a capacity of 48 million cubic metres, is expected to provide water for 4,280 hectares of new land and 1,255 hectares of existing land. In addition to providing drinking water, the reservoir is also expected to add 16 GWh of electricity to the national grid.
With a capacity of 147 million cubic metres, a diversion dam 6.4 km below the reservoir, a 16 km right bank and a 13.5 km left bank canal, the Heda Oya reservoir project will provide water for 5,308 hectares of new and existing land in the Heda Oya, Wila Oya and Karanda Oya basins. The Government expects it will provide 5 million cubic metres of water for drinking and other domestic purposes for residents in the Pottuwil, Lahugala and Panama areas. (HK)
