The Government yesterday announced it has dissolved a national security media centre set up to provide information to the media on the war during its final stages.
The Defence Ministry has dissolved the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) with effect from 1 November, the President’s Media Unit said.
President’s Spokesman Mohan Samaranayake said the decision was taken by the Defence Ministry and there was no special reason for the decision to abolish the centre.
The MCNS was established during the war for the specific purpose of disseminating all national security and defence-related information and data to the media and the public from one co-coordinated centre. It was administered by Lakshman Hulugalla as the Director General.
Media coordinators of all three armed forces, the Police and Special Task Force, attached to the Joint Operations Headquarters (JOH) liaised with field formations to collect and disseminate information.
