Govt. to establish authority to manage operations of expressways

The Government plans to set up an authority to handle all functions related to the expressways in the country.
The Government has received the approval from the Cabinet to set up a National Expressway Authority (NEA) which will take over the responsibility from the Road Development Authority which currently administer and manage all expressways.
Upon establishment, the NEA will administer and manage the operation and maintenance of the already commissioned Expressways and to plan and construct the proposed new projects.
The President in his capacity as the Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping has proposed the establishment of the NEA.
The new authority will be in charge of the Southern Expressway from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa and the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway which have already been commissioned and are in operation.
The section of the Outer Circular Highway from Kottawa to Kaduwela and the section of the Southern Expressway from Pinnaduwa to Matara, which are expected to be commissioned in March 2014, will also come under the NEA.
The Government has taken measures to initiate projects for the Northern Expressway from Enderamulla to Dambulla and Kandy, extension of the Southern Expressway from Matara to Hambantota and an expressway from Ingiriya to Ratnapura.
