Justice Minister and SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem has requested Indonesian Ambassador Djafar Husein to convince his Government to consider investing in various business ventures in post war Sri Lanka since many countries are keen in getting involved in projects locally, to which the envoy responded positively.

Ambassador Husein said that his country, which has been developing tremendously in the region, has shown interest in investing in Sri Lanka and expand the business activities in a large scale.

Currently Indonesia is engaged in exporting furniture, tyre and other products made in Indonesia to Sri Lanka.

Issues pertaining to both countries in the field of law among other relevant issues were discussed at the Minister’s residence on Thursday (22).

Minister Hakeem said that Arugambay in Pottuvil is a location where tourism is booming but that existing hotels are not upto international standards, an area where Indonesia can “step in.”

At the meeting, Ambassador Husein said that Indonesia imports gem, tea, pepper and other commodities from Sri Lanka and that Indonesia sends large quantities of its tea to Sri Lanka to mix with locally produced tea in order to export to foreign markets.

Minister Hakeem also expressed appreciation to the Sri Lanka Government for providing facilities to the Muslim community to practice religion freely and added that Quazi courts system prevails here, which implements Muslim marriage and divorce and act to resolve problems that arise in marriages.

Minister Hakeem, currently the President of Indonesia Sri Lanka Parliament Friendship Association, is scheduled to visit Indonesia in the near future.
