Handicrafts sector was given more assistance during 2010-2015

“At present the handicrafts sector has shown a huge development than any other period. The handicrafts villages are given more assistance and support for uplifting the livelihoods of craftsmen at present. It was Mahinda Rajapaksa, a leader with a passion to art and culture, who has created a background to this development in handicrafts sector,” said Southern Provincial Minister for Fisheries, Animal production and Development Environmental Affairs, Rural Development D.V. Upul. He expressed his ideas at the award ceremony held at the Dakshinapaya Auditorium of Galle district Provincial Council, organised by the National Crafts Council. Five best craftsmen were awarded with the ‘Vishwakarma’ honorary award for their service rendered to the handicrafts sector. A large number of craftsmen participated for the event. This program is scheduled to be held covering all the districts of the island. A lecture to develop attitudes of the craftsmen was also held at the event. Chairman of National Crafts Council Buddhi Keerthisena addressing the audience said, none other leader in the history has rendered a great service to the handicrafts sector like Mahinda Rajapaksa. Further he said that the President has advised to collaborate with the Urban Development Authority in implementing sales complexes in Colombo and main cities of the country in 2015 to get the foreign exposure and sale of handicrafts creations. He has also said that he would take measures for solving problems of craftsmen. Keerthisena further added the President’s interest in this field would create a golden age to the handicrafts sector in the country. Guests, Secretary of Provincial Industries D.S. Padmakulasooriya, Deputy General Manager of Regional Development Bank Prashd Handunhewa, Human Resource Development Consultant Ranjith Jayasekara, President of Galle Heritage Parakrama Dahanayake, officers from Handicrafts Development Federation and many other invitees graced the event.
