High Commission of Canada hosts Sri Lanka-Canada Business Council AGM

The High Commission of Canada, as patron, was pleased to host the 23rd annual general meeting (AGM) of the Sri Lanka-Canada Business Council (SLCBC) on 30 June 2014. The SLCBC is a key stakeholder in further strengthening bilateral trade and investment between Sri Lanka and Canada. The event held at the official residence of the High Commissioner was attended by key officials from the state and private sector as well international organisations. Speaking at the event, the High Commissioner Shelley Whiting noted the strength and depth of the relationship between the two countries and emphasised that sustainable peace would further increase Sri Lanka’s market potential and the country’s growth. Furthermore the High Commissioner was pleased to witness the recent successes of Canadian companies in doing business in Sri Lanka in the sectors of IT, Education and Agriculture and encouraged local business entities to liaise with the trade section of the High Commission to pursue opportunities in Canada. The event also presented an opportunity for Export Development Canada (EDC) Regional Manager West and South India Sandeep Bhatt, to inform how the EDC can support bilateral business interests. EDC is Canada’s export credit agency, a Crown corporation wholly owned by the Government of Canada, which provides a wide range of financing and insurance solutions for Canadian companies and their international customers. The AGM was followed by a networking reception for the local business community, stakeholders in the government, academics and Sri Lankan alumni of Canadian universities. The High Commission of Canada looks forward to strengthening the relationship with Sri Lanka in trade and all spheres of interactions.
