On Sunday 12 October the Hirdaramani Group officially commenced construction work on a new apparel manufacturing facility in Puthukkudiyirippu, Mullaitivu, with the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. The company is currently running a training facility in Mullaitivu and the establishment of the factory is the next step in creating jobs and opportunities for the communities in the area. “As a Group we made the decision to invest in the North-East of the country as part of our responsibility, as a corporate leader, to contribute toward the rehabilitation of the region following the civil war,” said Tony Nadaraja, Director/CEO of Hirdaramani Industries. “We were given the opportunity to set up a training facility in Mullaitivu, and on the first day we had 600 people show up. This highlights the tremendous enthusiasm amongst the people in these communities and the willingness to work hard and improve their lives; therefore it is important to create job opportunities for them. Seeing this eagerness only served to push us to get the factory up and running as soon as possible.” He added that due to the support of the army and government officials and the readiness of the people in the area, the entire process of setting up the training facility and starting work on the factory had been quite smooth and progressed very quickly. The factory will open in March 2015 and be fully operational by May/June, employing approximately 450 people, with a target to create at least 1,000 direct employment opportunities over the next few years.  The factory in Mullaitivu marks the Group’s second investment in the region, which commenced with a factory in Vavuniya. Having opened nearly four years ago, today, the Vavuniya factory runs two units operating 1,000 machines. In keeping with the Group’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices the Mullaitivu factory will be a state-of-the-art Green Factory developed in line with LEED Certification Criteria. “A core element of Hirdaramani’s values and the essence of our success has been a commitment to empower people and communities to achieve their potential. As such we are proud to be in a position to make an investment in the future of this community and we hope that this will help spur even more development in the region,” said Ranil Pathirana, Director of the Hirdaramani Group. Honoured Guests at the foundation laying ceremony were Major General Jagath Dias of the Sri Lanka Army and Tony Nadaraja; also in attendance were senior management representatives of the Hirdaramani Group and employees who have been recruited for the factory.
