Holcim Lanka clarifies story based on Cabinet spokesman’s comments

With reference to the Daily FT article of 15 August 2014 titled ‘Cabinet approves $ 107 m solid waste disposal system for Colombo,’ Holcim (Lanka) Ltd. has sent the following statement, which has been copied to Cabinet Spokesman Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella, Ministry of Urban Development and Defence Additional Secretary Rohan Seneviratne and Government Information Department Director General Dr. Ariyarathna Athugala:
The Metro Colombo Municipal Solid Waste Engineering Land Filling Project will be commissioned by the Ministry of Urban Development and Defence at a land which belongs to Cement Corporation in Wanathawilluwa and currently leased to Holcim (Lanka) Ltd. A feasibility study is being prepared for this project by the Project Developer.
Holcim (Lanka) Ltd. does not have any intention of using this waste as fuel for its electrical energy generation. Our manufacturing plant is in Puttalam and this waste management project will take place in the quarry at Wanatawilluwa. We operate within the parameters of the authorised area of the quarry demarked by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.
