International Conference on Sri Lanka-Japan Collaborative Research kicks off

The second International Conference on Sri Lanka-Japan Collaborative Research (SLJCR-2014) on the theme “Japan’s Science and Technology (S&T) Diplomacy” will kick off from today. The event will be held on three successive days commencing in Kandy at the Earl’s Regency Hotel on 15 December from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. followed by the second session in Colombo at the Board Room of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, on 16 December from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and finally in Galle at the Engineering Faculty Auditorium of the University of Ruhuna on 18 December from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. respectively. The initiative is under the joint patronage of the Sri Lanka Japan Study Centre (SLJSC) of the University of Peradeniya, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Embassy of Japan. Ambassador of Japan Nobuhito Hobo will grace the opening session at the Earl’s Regency Hotel, Kandy on 15 December as Chief Guest. The Keynote Speech at the opening session will be delivered by Prof. Monte Cassim of the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan. Visiting Japanese Professor Ken Kawamoto of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and of the International Institute for Resilient Society of Saitama University, Japan will deliver a guest lecture on “Development of Appropriate Technologies for Pollution Control and Environmental Restoration of Solid Waste Landfills”, a topic of relevance to Sri Lanka in the context of challenges faced by local authorities in addressing the problems of solid waste disposal and environmental pollution. Japan’s science and technology capabilities are greatly valued and trusted by many countries around the world and could be used as an effective tool for building cooperation in the context of an ever increasing necessity to address global issues collectively. The international conference SLJCR-2014 is designed to cater to the growing demand for international collaborative research among universities with a view to sharing complementary perspectives, knowledge, and skills of international researchers in addressing global issues.
