“Smart meters are a new version of the meter that records your household or enterprise energy use,” the Consultant for Research and Development at Jlanka Technologies, Nalin Karunasinghe, explained.
He said that the new Smart Meters are ‘smart’ because they will provide information about the energy you use directly to you or your supplier, without anyone having to read the meter, which should mean no more estimated bills.

He said that the Smart Meter had the ability to emerge and convert your home or office to become a Smart Home or Smart Office as this technology continued to develop. This ePro1000 Smart Meter is said to be country’s first-ever ‘Internet of Things’ product.
A smart meter is an electricity meter that measures and records your electricity use at different times in the day. A smart meter records electricity use every few seconds and gives you more information about the way you’re using electricity. This gives you better information and allows you to make more informed decisions about the use of electricity in your home.
e-Pro 1000 is a monitoring device that can monitor electrical power, electrical energy, current, voltage, power factor and frequency. Officials of JLanka Technologies said that the monitoring process was done through a web-based monitoring portal.
“Smart meters provide data that enables customers to make choices about how much energy they use by allowing them to access accurate real-time information about their electricity consumption. Customers can also contribute to the country by being responsible for their energy consumption,” Nalin Karunasinghe added.
He went on to explain that this device had the ability to connect multiple devices and then could monitor electricity usage of individual devices separately.
Smart Meter technology allows consumers to remotely switch on and off their air conditioners, refrigerators or light bulbs while observing their electricity usage. Industrial engineers can control their Maximum Demand. Maximum Demand is the power consumed over a predetermined period of time, which is approximately 15 minutes in Sri Lanka.
Karunasinghe said that fixing a Smart Meter at home would only take about an hour or less and the consumer would need to turn off the electricity for about 30 minutes during the installation process. Generally JLanka’s Smart Meter technician will place your smart meter next to the existing meter.
Utility companies propose that from a consumer perspective, Smart Metering offers potential benefits to householders. These include an end to estimated bills, which are a major source of complaints for many customers; a tool to help consumers better manage their energy use, stating that smart meters outside their homes could provide up-to-date information on gas and electricity consumption and in doing so help people to manage their energy use and reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions.
