Sri Lanka’s first Smart Meter device, ePro1000 helps every home and office to manage and monitor its electricity consumption. Have you ever imagined how much you’re spending on electricity in your home or at your office or your company? Imagine if you could see how much you’re using and spending on energy on each equipment online and in your home, at your office or your company. “Smart meters are a new version of the meter that records your household or enterprise energy use,” the Consultant for Research and Development at Jlanka Technologies, Nalin Karunasinghe, explained. He said that the new Smart Meters are ‘smart’ because they will provide information about the energy you use directly to you or your supplier, without anyone having to read the meter, which should mean no more estimated bills. They should also help people better understand their consumption and they will provide the platform for time of use and smart grid going forward. He said that the Smart Meter had the ability to emerge and convert your home or office to become a Smart Home or Smart Office as this technology continued to develop. This ePro1000 Smart Meter is said to be country’s first-ever ‘Internet of Things’ product. A smart meter is an electricity meter that measures and records your electricity use at different times in the day. A smart meter records electricity use every few seconds and gives you more information about the way you’re using electricity. This gives you better information and allows you to make more informed decisions about the use of electricity in your home. e-Pro 1000 is a monitoring device that can monitor electrical power, electrical energy, current, voltage, power factor and frequency. Officials of JLanka Technologies said that the monitoring process was done through a web-based monitoring portal. “Smart meters provide data that enables customers to make choices about how much energy they use by allowing them to access accurate real-time information about their electricity consumption. Customers can also contribute to the country by being responsible for their energy consumption,” Nalin Karunasinghe added. He went on to explain that this device had the ability to connect multiple devices and then could monitor electricity usage of individual devices separately. Smart Meter technology allows consumers to remotely switch on and off their air conditioners, refrigerators or light bulbs while observing their electricity usage. Industrial engineers can control their Maximum Demand. Maximum Demand is the power consumed over a predetermined period of time, which is approximately 15 minutes in Sri Lanka. Karunasinghe said that fixing a Smart Meter at home would only take about an hour or less and the consumer would need to turn off the electricity for about 30 minutes during the installation process. Generally JLanka’s Smart Meter technician will place your smart meter next to the existing meter. Utility companies propose that from a consumer perspective, Smart Metering offers potential benefits to householders. These include an end to estimated bills, which are a major source of complaints for many customers; a tool to help consumers better manage their energy use, stating that smart meters outside their homes could provide up-to-date information on gas and electricity consumption and in doing so help people to manage their energy use and reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions. The Smart Meter is just a small box of clever electronics tucked away in the home or enterprise. And JLanka Smart Meters are very safe and are IP65 certified. The Smart Meter introduced by JLanka will never affect the energy meter provided by an electricity provider and you do not need to get permission from your electricity provider. For more information on Smart Meters you can visit JLanka’s website www.jlankatech.com or JLanka branches island-wide. JLanka Technologies is the No.1 solar provider in Sri Lanka with the most number of solar installations generated over 3MW electricity. The company’s in-house team and installers will take care of your entire project from start to finish. Utility costs tend to rise ever year but JLanka lets you lock in low, predictable solar energy rates that are guaranteed for years to come.
