The Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) in collaboration with the WORLD VISION Lunugamvehera Regional Development Programme and Hambantota District Secretariat is organising a Job Fair and the Higher Education Exhibition at the Hambantota Singapore Conference Hall on the 28 April 2011.

HDCC is the foremost representative of the private sector in the Hambantota District and its mission is to act as the ‘Gateway’ for development, ensuring the social cohesion and economic success of the Hambantota District.  As a social responsibility, but also as a contribution to the economic development of the District, HDCC manages the Career Service Centre (CSC) and the Youth Business Sri Lanka Programme (YBSL) which provide services and benefits to young people in the Hambantota District.

The key functions of the CSC are to monitor employment opportunities, to match young job seekers, and to arrange the provision of appropriate training courses and encourage vocational training.  YBSL aims to help young people — who otherwise would not have the opportunity — to develop their self-confidence and achieve economic independence through the medium of self-employment.

Based on the experience gained in organising Job Fairs and Higher Education Exhibitions in the past, the HDCC is presently organising the Job Fair and Higher Education Exhibition this year too, with the objective of placing unemployed youth in employment, providing them with self-employment opportunities and providing them with guidance to develop their potential and talents in vocational activities.

Over 30 private companies who are seeking to employ staff and Professional organisations that provide Career Skills and self employment will be participating at the event such as Sonak Lanka, David Pieris, LOLC, John Keels, Ceylinco Cisco etc. Training providers such as Technical Colleges, Vocational training Authority NAITA, AAT, CIMA, Orient Academy, ICBT, MAL etc. will be participating in this event. During the event, group career counselling programmes will be conducted. University of Ruhuna will conduct a special seminar on “self employment opportunities”. Self employment service providers in the district will organise a “Self Employment Piyasa” in the Job fair. Keynote speech will be delivered by Mohan Palliyaguru, well known consultant and trainer. More than 2000 job seekers will be given a rare opportunity to meet company representatives and professionals. This will be indeed a new experience for the youth of the area.
