Kelani Cables PLC, Sri Lanka’s number one brand of electrical and communication cables, conducts its workshop ‘Kelani Visura’ (electrical technicians’ golden welfare service) in regard to laying wires in electrical systems for apprentices and technicians throughout the island as a CSR program. Two ‘Kelani Visura’ programs were conducted in Gnanam hotel in Jaffna and Nellie hotel in Vavunia recently where extensive building construction work is being done at present. The two programs were attended by 250 electricians from these vicinities. Newest methods and techniques used in developed countries on the subject of laying wires in electrical systems are taught to apprentices and technicians through ‘Kelani Visura’. Further, under this CSR program Kelani Cables gear technical officers and professional electricians scattered in the island with the industry-specific latest techniques. The programs in Jaffana and Vavuniya were conducted by Anopradeepan, of the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) who is an assessor for the whole island. Technicians who attended the program were taught; how to fix plug-points and switches taking into account the distance and nature of the house/building, select wires to suit the number of lamps, laying of wires and other areas pertaining to the subject. These fully-fledged one-day workshops which were inclusive of food and refreshments saw presentation of certificates and a gift to the participants at the conclusion. The significance of ‘Kelani Visura’ program conducted by Kelani Cables is gearing every participant with the ability to draw an electrical wire-laying plan of a house or a building during the session. Thus a particular technician becomes a person who could rub shoulders with others in this competitive field. Kelani Cables was able to reach the milestone of training 15,000 technicians by the end of 2013. Thus now Kelani Visura (electrical technicians’ golden welfare service) has become the top-of-the-mind training workshop aimed at training novices and technicians throughout the island. Kelani Cables has done a yeomen service to the nation by conducting training programs for budding electrical technicians of the districts such as Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Ampara and Monaragala, the locales which suffered most due to the separatist war. Kelani Cables PLC Brand Development Manager Channa Jayasinghe expressing views at the workshops said the company treats this CSR program as an investment made for the benefit of the new breed of electrical technicians. “As the company which is produced premium electrical and communication cables under the theme of ‘Wayar nam Kelani,’ this time we selected Jaffna and Vavuniya for Kelani Visura workshops for a valid reason. Presently construction work is being done at great momentum in these areas. Thus the electrical technicians who involve in these projects need to have a competitive knowledge of the subject. Kelani Visura gears them perfectly to face this challenge by inducing them with world-class knowledge. Kelani Visura’s popularity among the novices and electricians throughout the island is a value addition to this generous CSR program of Kelani Cables,” said Jayasinghe.
