  •  A bid to introduce talented youth to the nation
Kelani Cables PLC, Sri Lanka’s number one brand in secure electrical and communication cables has been conducting the CSR program ‘Kelani Saviya’ in association with the engineering faculty of the Peradeniya University for six years. The program is to be extended with the participation of other local universities in 2014. Kelani Cables PLC CEO Mahinda Saranapala announced this at an event held at Galadari hotel recently to hand over certificates to the successful students of the sixth batch of Kelani Saviya. Chief Guest of the event was the Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne. Kelani Cables PLC CEO said, the CSR program Kelani Saviya was commenced in 2007 in association with the engineering faculty of Peradeniya University with a view to grooming electrical technicians and this one-year training program has become very popular among the youth over the years. “Novices and students who have left school who look forward to self employment are very attracted to ‘Kelani Saviya’ electrical training program. We have already introduced to the country a breed of over 200 talented and skilled youth via this program. As a hundred percent Sri Lankan owned company serving the nation for over four decades manufacturing electrical and communication cables, we are proud to announce that many of these youth are already employed in local and foreign companies and have established stability in life,” he said. He added, “We pay our gratitude to the engineering faculty of the Peradeniya University for conducting this training program as a fully fledged and productive one. Kelani Saviya is the only training program which intimates an internationally recognised University certificate with the successful candidates who have only GCE ordinary level education.” The CEO further stated that Kelani Cables is determined to expand Kelani Saviya services to other areas in the country as well including the North and South to brighten up lives of the apprentices in those areas. Thus he invited all universities to join hands with Kelani Cables in this endeavour. Kelani Saviya is the brainchild of Prof. J B Ekanayake of Peradeniya University. The program enhances the skills of self employed electrical technicians and grooms school leavers to be electrical technicians. The only criterion for enrolment in the Kelani Saviya training program is to have GCE ordinary level qualifications. This is the first time ever a local university has joined hands with a private entity to conduct a training program of this nature. Kelani Cables PLC is a 100% Sri Lankan owned company serving the nation for 44 years manufacturing electrical and communications cables.
